FAQ

What's the difference between my marginal and average tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar of income; your average rate is total tax divided by total income – always lower, because Canada's brackets only tax each slice of income at its own rate. The marginal rate is the one that matters for decisions like RRSP contributions or extra income.
How much tax does an RRSP contribution save?
Roughly your contribution multiplied by your combined marginal rate – a $10,000 contribution at a 30% marginal rate saves about $3,000. It can be more when the deduction drops you through a bracket; the RRSP optimizer in this calculator computes the exact figure for your income and province.
How are capital gains and dividends taxed in Canada?
Half of a capital gain is added to taxable income; the other half is tax-free. Canadian dividends are grossed up and then offset by the dividend tax credit, which usually makes eligible dividends lighter-taxed than salary. This calculator handles both, by province.
Which provinces does this calculator cover?
All 13 – every province and territory, using 2026 federal and provincial brackets, credits, and surtaxes where they apply.
When are taxes due in Canada?
For most people, April 30 of the following year – for both filing and payment. The self-employed (and their spouses) have until June 15 to file, but any balance owing is still due April 30. Filing late with a balance owing adds penalties on top of interest, so file on time even if you can't pay in full.
How can I pay less tax in Canada?
The biggest levers for most people: RRSP contributions (deducted at your marginal rate – try the optimizer in this calculator), TFSA growth (never taxed), claiming every credit you're entitled to (medical, donations, tuition), and pension income splitting for retired couples. Beyond those, tax planning gets personal – worth a conversation with a professional.

No Guarantee of Accuracy

While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, we cannot guarantee that the calculations produced by this tool are correct, complete, or current. Tax rates, brackets, credits, and rules used are based on publicly available information from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and provincial/territorial tax authorities, and are subject to change without notice. Not a Substitute for Professional Advice

This calculator is not a substitute for the advice of a qualified tax professional, chartered professional accountant (CPA), or legal counsel. You should consult a qualified professional before making any financial or tax-related decisions. Individuals with complex tax situations — including but not limited to those subject to alternative minimum tax (AMT), capital gains, dividend income, rental income, foreign income, or multiple sources of self-employment income — should seek professional advice.

RRSP Contribution Room

Any RRSP contribution room estimates provided by this calculator are approximations only. Your actual RRSP deduction limit is determined by the CRA and can be found on your most recent Notice of Assessment or through CRA My Account. Contributing in excess of your actual deduction limit (beyond the $2,000 lifetime over-contribution allowance) may result in a penalty tax of 1% per month on the excess amount under Part X.1 of the Income Tax Act. Do not rely solely on this calculator to determine your contribution room.

Scope Limitations

This calculator includes the basic personal amount, CPP/QPP and EI premiums, QPIP (Quebec), the Canada employment amount, RRSP and FHSA deductions, capital gains (50% inclusion), eligible and non-eligible Canadian dividends (gross-up and federal/provincial dividend tax credits), charitable donation credits, medical expense credits, the federal tuition credit, the Quebec deduction for workers, self-employed CPP/QPP payable, and standard provincial/territorial credits. It does not include every available deduction or tax credit, and may not reflect your complete tax situation. Credits and situations not covered include, but are not limited to: alternative minimum tax (AMT — a warning is shown when it may apply, but it is not computed), provincial tuition credits and tuition carry-forwards/transfers, foreign tax credits, disability credits, child care expenses, pension income splitting, and climate action incentive payments.
